The Mapuche ceramic tradition is heir to other ancestral cultures with which they shared the geographical area of Araucanía, specifically the El Vergel and Pitrén culture. Their name comes from the hill on whose slopes Lake Calafquén is located and they were the first agro-pottery inhabitants of central-southern Chile approximately 1000 years ago.
Its most characteristic shapes are the asymmetrical jugs with a globular body and handles, whose volume can represent frogs or ducks. Its style and color varies from the burnished black of burnt clay - a technique probably inherited from Andean cultures further north - and the red and orange color, also burnished and coming from the work of red clay.
These pieces are made using the same technique and ancestral designs. They are hand modeled and carefully painted. The result is collectible; jugs and vessels with globular shapes, as if inflated by a magical breath, and with an enigmatic color that calls us to the earth or a deep black that absorbs the gaze and invites contemplation. They are decorative and utilitarian, but wherever they are, you will not stop looking at them to imagine life in times of deep connection with nature, its cycles and the hands of the man who wants to inhabit it.
This globular, monochrome, asymmetrical, apparently zoomorphic jug with a bridge handle is a faithful reproduction of an example of this advanced pottery tradition. Today you have the privilege of being able to use it utilitarianly as a jug or display it as the beautiful museum piece that it is. It is a true work of art measuring 18 cm high by 15 cm wide and 17 cm long that distinguishes any table or shelf!
