Collection: Aymara Textile
In the Aymara peoples of northern Chile, the textile tradition of pre-Hispanic origin based on fiber from Andean camelids -alpacas and vicuñas- remains deeply rooted. A myriad of ponchos, shawls, ruanas, and blankets with geometric motifs, plain stripes or zoomorphic figures of fauna typical of the Andean highlands. They are woven on backstrap, four-peg, or pedal looms. They are woven in the north of Chile, but above all they are woven in the Andes, from Titicaca to Humahuaca, from Bolivia to Argentina, from Peru to this long, narrow strip that we call Chile.
